The Toffee men have had a horror beginning to this campaign after suffering two successive losses. A 6-1 rout was followed by a shock 1-0 loss to new boys Burnley. Wade Elliott's 34th-minute goal gave the Clarets the lead, but Everton's misery was compounded when Louis Saha missed a penalty six minutes later.
Manager David Moyes will hope his side can recover from a bad start as well as the loss of Joleon Lescott to Manchester City. The protracted transfer was finally completed this week and Moyes has moved to sign winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov just after the fee was agreed between the clubs.
Aiyegbeni Yakubu is expected to play for the first time since November when he suffered a ruptured Achilles. Phil Jagielka, Mikel Arteta and Victor Anichebe continue to miss out with injury.
Meanwhile Wigan have had an indifferent start to the season. They won their first game by a 2-0 margin over Aston Villa, but slipped to a 1-0 loss to Wolves in the next game. Last week, they succumbed 5-0 to Manchester United with Wayne Rooney scoring twice and Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Nani chipping in with one goal each.
Manager Roberto Martinez has moved to bolster his squad and has signed French midfielder Mohamed Diame. Erik Edman, Emmerson Boyce, Ben Watson, Cho Won-hee and James McCarthy are in line to make it to the first team for the Carling Cup match against Blackpool and could be handed starting places for that game.
